A Witch's Illustrated Encounters
Arabella's Bestiary : A Witch's Illustrated Encounters is my senior Illustration thesis for my BFA at Ringling College of Art and Design.
It is a 38-page book featuring both digital and traditional illustrations (pencil and gouache) .
Arabella's Bestiary explores fantastical creatures from the perspective of a young witch, named Arabella, as she records her encounters with these creatures.
I wanted to make the book come alive and feel like her actual journal.
So, besides creating the illustrations and narrative text for this book, I also hand-stained coffee pages, stamped wax seals and sewed twine in order to create the assets for the book.
ARABELLA'S BESTIARY

SECTION PAGES
Title Pages and Section Titles divide the different 'genres' of fantastical creatures Arabella encounters. These title pages feature illustrations created with gouache, and edited in Photoshop. I decided to maintain a warm tone to all the illustrations on the title pages in order to portray the vintage feel of the journal.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS
LAYOUT
Each illustration is accompanied by narrative text depicting the encounters Arabella faces. The spot illustrations surrounding the text were created with graphite and scanned in.
Below you will find detail photos of some fan-favorite illustrations from the project.

ALTERNATE CONTENT
I created pattern endsheets for this book, also in gouache and assembled in Photoshop. I enjoy pattern making and wanted to find a way to incorporate it into my thesis without overwhelming the main illustrations. I found this to be a good compromise.
Other than the endsheets, I also created a 'Meet the Artist' page. I wanted to add a personal touch to the book and introduce myself to those who may not know me. I also used it as a thank-you page to my family, including one of my favorite family photos when I was a baby.
